Corfu Has Over 60km of Coastline. Here Is Where to Actually Go
Corfu has over 60 kilometres of coastline and more than 40 named beaches. The five below were chosen because they each offer something genuinely distinct, because they cover different parts of the island, and because we have looked at what real visitors, people who have actually made the journey, say about them once they get there. Not what the brochure says. What the person standing on the beach, after the hike down or the drive across the island, actually thinks.
Some of these beaches require effort to reach. Some are organised and easy. None of them will disappoint you if you go at the right time, prepared for what they actually are rather than a sanitised version of the idea of them.
Porto Timoni
The double cove that earns every step of the hike down.
Porto Timoni is the image that appears on every "Corfu from above" post you have ever seen. A narrow isthmus of pale sand and rock, flanked on both sides by perfect coves, enclosed by green hills and cliffs. The water on the sheltered side is almost unnervingly clear. On a calm morning before the boats arrive, it looks like something drawn rather than something real.
The beach sits below the village of Afionas on Corfu's northwest coast. The only way to reach it on foot is a 20 to 30 minute descent on a rocky path. The path is steep, loose in places, and entirely without shade. This is not a gentle stroll. What it is, is completely worth it.
There are two beaches at the bottom: a larger one facing the open sea, rougher and better for swimming, and a smaller sheltered cove on the other side of the isthmus, calmer and shallower. We recommend heading to the sheltered side first. It is where the water is most spectacular and where most people end up staying for the day.
Quick Facts
"Porto Timoni is crazy beautiful. It is literally like something out of a dream and well worth the visit. The hike down is long, especially in the heat, and when you get to the bottom there are no facilities to buy drinks. The beach was SO BUSY when we visited in August. We did find a spot eventually but arrive early."
Tripadvisor visitor review, August 2025
"The path is full of scree and sometimes really steep. We would definitely recommend wearing sturdy footwear. If you are not well on your feet, think carefully. That said, Porto Timoni Beach should definitely be seen."
Tripadvisor visitor review, Summer 2024
Our Honest Verdict
Porto Timoni is the most visually spectacular beach on the island and probably the most photographed view in all of Corfu. Go in May, June or September for the best combination of warmth and space. In August, it is genuinely crowded at the bottom and the hike up in the midday heat is punishing. Bring more water than you think you need, wear proper shoes, and go early. The effort is paid back in full.
Getting There
Afionas is accessible by a narrow but paved road from Agios Georgios Pagon on the northwest coast. A standard city car reaches the village car park without difficulty. Parking costs 5 to 8 euros for the day. GPS is reliable here. Browse our fleet and we will help you choose the right car for the northwest coast roads.
Paleokastritsa
The jewel of Corfu, best experienced before 10am or in September.
Paleokastritsa is not a single beach. It is a collection of six interconnected coves enclosed by dramatic limestone cliffs, with a 12th-century monastery perched on the headland above and waters so blue they photograph as if edited. This is, by most measures, the most famous stretch of coastline in Corfu and one of the most visited places in Greece.
The water here is extraordinarily cold by Mediterranean standards, even in summer. It is clear and beautiful, but come prepared for a genuine shock if you are used to the Aegean. The coves themselves are pebble and stone rather than sand, so we recommend beach shoes. What Paleokastritsa does beyond swimming is what makes it special: the boat trips into the sea caves for around 10 euros per person are a genuine highlight, and the trail up to the monastery offers views that most visitors never find.
In high summer it is very busy, the car park fills early, and sunbeds in the coves cost up to 25 euros per person per day at the organised spots. If you are visiting in July or August, plan to arrive before 9am. In September or October, the same place belongs almost entirely to you.
Quick Facts
"Bluest of the blue. A slice of paradise on Earth. The backdrop of the mountains and the hilltop monastery was just too much beauty to witness. A must to visit when you are in Corfu."
Tripadvisor visitor review, 2024
"Beautiful place, most likely best in June or September. After swimming we rented a boat and went to some caves with a captain who explained everything, for 10 euros per person. Strongly suggest it."
Tripadvisor visitor review, Summer 2024
Our Honest Verdict
Paleokastritsa is everything you have heard. It is also genuinely overcrowded in July and August, and the organised sunbed prices reflect that. Go early or go in the shoulder season and the experience transforms entirely. The sea cave boat trip is non-negotiable if you visit. The monastery trail above the main cove, which most visitors miss, offers a view back down over the bays that is better than anything you will see from the beach itself.
Getting There
Paleokastritsa is well signposted from Corfu Town, roughly 26km northwest on good roads. A standard city car handles the route easily. The main car park fills fast in summer. Arrive before 9am in July and August or expect to queue. See our available cars for the right choice for your group size.
Rovinia
The beach serious swimmers come back to, year after year.
Rovinia sits just south of Paleokastritsa, enclosed by sheer cliffs and reached either by a short walk through the hillside or by boat. It is smaller and more intimate than its famous neighbour, and consistently described by visitors as one of the most beautiful beaches they have ever been to. The water is exceptionally clear, turquoise to green depending on the light, and the snorkelling around the rocks on the right-hand side of the bay is some of the best on the island.
The access road is the one thing that catches people off guard: narrow, rocky and steep, with three car parks at different points on the descent. The lower you go, the cheaper the parking but the worse the road surface. Our advice is to use the second car park down, which costs around 4 euros for the day, and walk the final stretch. Do not follow Google Maps to the very bottom. The last section is in poor condition and can seriously damage a car, particularly on the way back up.
A small canteen boat anchors in the bay during summer months, selling cold drinks and basic snacks. Beyond that, there is nothing on the beach. Bring your own food, water and umbrella, the shady spots go fast in the afternoon.
Quick Facts
"Rovinia Beach is absolutely worth a visit. It is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in Corfu. The water is crystal clear with stunning shades of blue and green. A very important tip: do not follow Google Maps all the way down. The last stretch of road is in terrible condition. Use the second car park and walk."
Tripadvisor visitor review, 2025
"Fantastic snorkelling on the right side of the beach around the rocks. You can go around the rocks into the next bay. Good variety of fish, starfish, crabs. One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to. If you visit Corfu, do not miss it."
Tripadvisor visitor review, 2024
Our Honest Verdict
Rovinia consistently earns "most beautiful beach in Corfu" from visitors who have seen a lot of Corfu. What separates it from Porto Timoni is that the access, while imperfect, does not require a proper hike. Park at the second car park, walk 10 to 15 minutes, and you are there. The snorkelling on the right-hand rocks is exceptional. Come with an umbrella as the shady spots disappear quickly, bring your own food and drinks, and budget a full half day. It rewards the time.
Getting There
Rovinia is reached via a narrow road from Liapades, approximately 30km from Corfu Town. A standard city car is fine to the second car park. For anyone wanting to explore further along the west coast the same day, a higher clearance vehicle gives you more flexibility. Check our fleet or get in touch and we will advise you directly.
Avlaki
The beach that locals actually use. Quiet in a way that takes some visitors by surprise.
Avlaki sits in a sheltered bay on Corfu's northeast coast, between the village of Kassiopi and Agios Stefanos. It holds a Blue Flag certification, meaning the water quality is consistently monitored and the beach is cleaned daily. It is around 500 metres long, made up of smooth large pebbles, and backed by a handful of villas, green trees and two tavernas that are consistently praised in every review category: food, service and value.
What Avlaki offers that most famous Corfu beaches do not is a genuine sense of quiet. It sits slightly off the main tourist circuit of the northeast coast, well-known to locals and returning visitors but rarely featured on the coach excursions. The bay faces northeast, which means it is sheltered from the prevailing summer winds that affect the south and west coasts. Because of this, the water here warms early in the season and stays calm even when other beaches are choppy.
We have seen this bay at its best in the early morning when the water is still and the light comes across the channel from Albania. It is one of those places that rewards arriving before everyone else does.
Quick Facts
"Wonderful beach with two first class tavernas and boat hire. Just love Avlaki. Really, really silent, so enchanting. If you are really lucky, as we were once, you will see dolphins playing in the bay. Just magical."
Tripadvisor visitor review, returning visitor, multiple visits
"The best beach we found in Corfu. Gorgeous beach, we visit each time we come to the island. Love the clear, shallow water. The tavernas have beautiful food."
Tripadvisor visitor review, 2024
Our Honest Verdict
Avlaki is the answer to the question: where do you go when you want a genuinely good beach without the spectacle or the crowds of the west coast? It is not the most dramatic beach on the island. What it is, is reliable. The water quality is certified. The tavernas are genuinely excellent. The bay is calm and the atmosphere is unhurried. For families, for couples who want a full day at the beach without logistics, and for anyone coming back to Corfu who wants something the tourist brochure misses, Avlaki is the right choice.
Getting There
Avlaki is about 37km north of Corfu Town, approximately 45 minutes by car. Follow the coast road from Kassiopi and look for the Avlaki sign heading south. Note that GPS can be unreliable on the final stretch; follow the paved road signs rather than the app. Any car in our fleet handles this route comfortably.
Issos
Sand dunes, a flamingo lagoon and the most un-Greek beach on the island.
Issos is the beach on this list that surprises people most, because it does not look like it belongs on a Greek island. A long stretch of fine golden sand backed by wild dunes, a cedar forest, and the freshwater Korission Lagoon: the landscape feels North African in places, particularly when the light is low and the dunes cast long shadows across the sand. Over four kilometres of beach, most of it free of sun loungers and facilities, ending at a lagoon where flamingos appear in the mornings, particularly in spring and autumn.
Issos sits on Corfu's southwest coast, around 35km from Corfu Town, roughly an hour's drive on roads that narrow considerably in the final few kilometres. The journey is worth it. The beach offers both an organised section with sunbeds and umbrellas at around 15 euros for two beds and a parasol, and a completely wild section where you can walk for thirty minutes without seeing another person.
The dunes themselves are a highlight entirely separate from the beach. Climb them in the late afternoon and you get a view over the water on one side and the lagoon on the other, with the sun dropping behind the hills. In our view, this is one of the best sunset spots on the island, and one almost no one knows about unless they have been here before.
Quick Facts
"A real favourite. A long stretch of fine sand with impressive dunes that give it a wild and preserved appearance. The water is clear and shallow over a long distance, which is perfect for families. The mood is calm and peaceful, away from the bustle."
Tripadvisor visitor review, 2024
"The beach of Issos is the ideal choice for us on the island of Corfu. We have not found any other beach that combines everything so well. Beautiful dunes, you can see the lake on the other side, the panorama is stunning. Climb the dunes for the sunset view. Miraculous."
Tripadvisor visitor review, 2025
Our Honest Verdict
Issos is the wildcard on this list and arguably the most unique. No other beach in Corfu, and few in all of Greece, combines sand dunes, a flamingo lagoon, four kilometres of uninterrupted coastline and a sunset view that stops you in your tracks. It is further from the main resorts than the others, and the wind can be strong, but if you are driving the island anyway and have a full day, Issos deserves at least three hours. Go in the morning, walk the full dune line, swim, and stay for the sunset.
Getting There
Issos is about 35km south of Corfu Town, roughly an hour by car. The main road is good; the final two kilometres narrow to one lane in places and the last stretch to the parking area is an unpaved track. A standard city car manages fine in dry conditions. If you plan to combine Issos with other south coast stops, a slightly higher clearance vehicle adds peace of mind. Browse our fleet for the right car for your itinerary.
